feeling blah

I'm feeling so discouraged tonight about my job and about having to teach to tests and I have all these philosophical questions about what my job really is... I feel a responsibility to expose my students to great literature and teach them write for a variety of audiences and purposes and teach them grammar and root words and punctuation... Yet I also have to look at what the majority of them *need to know for purposes of testing, and what they realistically will use in the future. Anyway, I was coming here to blog about it and get it all out, but Lexi is crying and Sean can't comfort her so I guess I won't be able to. Oh well. I'm feeling discouraged. :( Tomorrow is a new day though....

oh hang in there.. here in WA we have WASL.. it is pretty controversial.. but it is state testing and passing determines to some extent $ from the state. It is frustrating, cause basically kids are learning how to pass a test.. instead of the things you mention.. how to think like the test.. and then the test takes 3 weeks of their school year each spring.. our school did very poorly last year, so even more emphasis is placed on it this year..

hope sean listened to you vent!

Shannon, I feel your pain. It is such a tough world in teaching. We want to think we are giving these kids tools for life and helping to open their minds and really enjoy learning. But, alas, it's all done for the enjoyment of the administration who can say, (in the words of Mad TV) "Look what I can do!!") SO frustrating.
Sorry about poor Lexi too. I'm sure you were able to console her. She is such a cute baby! Take care
