Lexi's Birthday

Lexi turned two last weekend! She is a sweetie. She's talking a lot more now, saying cute little things and trying to keep up with her big brother.

Camping

We went camping on Saturday. Sean said, "This hasn't been bad, has it?" I said, "Camping is always a mix of good and bad. You just hope the good outweighs the bad enough that you want to go back."

Good:
beautiful campsite
nothing to do but relax
cooking/eating outdoors
nature
hanging out with the whole family, which is rare nowdays
warm campfire on a cold night

Bad:
it rained for a little while when we first got there
Lexi jumped in mud puddles and generally got dirty
I don't sleep well camping
I declared that we were going simple on the food. That did not work out well. Before I was done I had gone to the convenience store twice for groceries. I paid $13 for bread, peanut butter, and honey since I forgot to bring dinner that Josh could eat.

In the end, the good won out and we had fun.

The Best Way to Spend an Afternoon

The camara work on that one is by Britt. Sorry if it made you seasick.

If Brittney doesn't look happy, it's because she had to be dragged out on the boat against her will. Have you ever heard of such a thing? She had fun once we got out there, though.

We had an enjoyable weekend. It was a nice mix of hanging with family, relaxing, visiting graves, chores, and getting some much needed yardwork done. It was nice to get back to work today knowing that there are only a few days left. I'm enjoying the last few days with my students. I gave my first period class a big thrill today when I accidentally swore in class, which I don't normally do because I think it's unprofessional and inappropriate and I try to use my fancy book learnin' vocabulary in class. So anyway... I was trying to get them into a discussion, and they were still sleepy, and I was getting all fired up and passionate and a "hell" slipped out and I immediately put my hand up to my mouth and they thought it was the funniest thing ever. They were awake after that, though. I am so looking forward to summer, but these kids have been a lot of fun. Most of them. Some of them.

Update on random stuff

Sean stayed home with the kids today because Josh seemed like he was coming down with something, so we kept him home. When I got home, the house was clean and smelling like delicious, the kids were happy, the lawn was mowed and trimmed, and the furniture was rearranged. I asked him if he would like to please be a stay-at-home dad. He said he would if I made 100K. Hmmmm... How can I make 100K at my job? Legally? Maybe a career change is in order.

Teenagers are so weird, but they are funny. I really like working with them. One of my boys chose to read Pride and Prejudice (I think because his girlfriend was, so he figured they could work together). In his reading log, I asked how he had liked the book, and he said, "There was too much romance. No action, or at least some physical fighting." LOL The other day when I was in Barnes and Noble, I saw a book called Pride & Prejudice & Zombies . It's a combination of the classic with zombies. I almost bought it for him.

Well, Mother's Day was last weekend. I won't make my yearly I Hate Mother's Day post. Well, maybe I will. I hate Mother's Day. Nuff said. The day itself was nice, though. My family (that lives here) came over for dinner and it was so nice hanging out with them. They rock. They are just cool people to talk to/be around. Sean took off after a little while and went to hang with him mom and family, so that worked out really nicely. My kids got me presents and flowers, my husband got me flowers for my yard and helped me plant them. I love any excuse to get together with family... I just hate what the day stands for (to me).

So here's something cool... My brother-in-law Peter graduated from med school yesterday! He's pretty dang amazing, and we are really proud of him. He's going to be a head and neck surgeon (right, Heather?)

Courtney is working a ton of hours right now. I'm a little bit worried about it, but I know she doesn't want to ask for reduced hours going into summer, because in a few weeks she'll be wanting to be working more. She hasn't had a day off since last week and I don't know when she'll be getting one next. Yuck. Combined with school, that's a heavy load.

Brittney missed school today to go to Lagoon with a club she's in. It's the MESA club (Math Engineering Science something club) I got all excited when she joined it because I am always trying to tell her to go into engineering, but she assured me that she joined because they always have food. And they go to Lagoon.

Josh is loving this nicer weather so he can play outside with the neighbor kids. He's a little kamikaze on his scooter. I think he's going to hurt himself before the summer is over. He is way itchy right now with grass pollinating. The daycare had their annual carnival today, and I didn't want to take him since he had been a little sick. Bummer. It's really cute. They do this rubber ducky race that Lexi would have gone ape over. So he told me tonight, all excited, "Mom! In a few days at school it's going to be the carnival!!" Doh. I had to tell him we missed it and his face fell, but he recovered.

Lexi is at a cute age. I love when kids really start talking and putting words together. It's so fun to see how they do it. Her latest is "No not." As in, "No, I'm not going to." Said in a sweet little voice, of course.

Mom: Sit down, Lexi.
Lexi: No not.

Mom: Are you going to go potty in the toilet?
Lexi: No not.

Mom: Do you want princess underwear?
Lexi: No not. No not prinsa.

Survivor! Is getting so good! I really am loving this season, because the strategy is pretty fun to analyze. I loved Stephen's explanation last week about how he memorized the numbers for the challenge. Love when they cast really smart people on this show and they actually use their brains. The nerds... they are my peeps!!

Well, that's it for now. Off to eat pecan pie.

Zen and the Art of Mazda Maintenance

I love this Zen Buddhist parable (though it looks like it has Taoist roots, which I didn't know), and it came to mind this week.

There is a Taoist story of an old farmer who had worked his crops for many years. One day his horse ran away. Upon hearing the news, his neighbors came to visit. "Such bad luck," they said sympathetically. "May be," the farmer replied. The next morning the horse returned, bringing with it three other wild horses. "How wonderful," the neighbors exclaimed. "May be," replied the old man. The following day, his son tried to ride one of the untamed horses, was thrown, and broke his leg. The neighbors again came to offer their sympathy on his misfortune. "May be," answered the farmer. The day after, military officials came to the village to draft young men into the army. Seeing that the son's leg was broken, they passed him by. The neighbors congratulated the farmer on how well things had turned out. "May be," said the farmer.

This is totally the way life goes. Curses turn into blessings and then blessings can turn into curses. Tradeoffs and ups and downs. A month or so ago, the powers-that-be at Sean's work decided to switch him from office staff to maintenance staff, which didn't change much except for who he reports to, but still, he was worried about any unforeseen negative outcomes. Flash forward. The transmission in the Mazda has been acting up. The girls and I drove it to Salt Lake on Monday night, about 40 min from my house, to shop for a prom dress. Once we got out there, the car started slipping out of gear. On the way home it was really bad, and it totally had a melt down (literally) about 5 miles from home. Which sucked, but it could have happened clear out at the mall. Or on the freeway. At least we were close to home, and close to our mechanic, so Sean could easily come and get us, and we just towed it right over there. We got a place to rebuild our transmission for a little under $2K. Which, ouch. But then Sean found out that, as part of the maintenance department, he was on mandatory overtime for at least the next 2 weeks, including weekends... somewhere between 36-56 hours of overtime at least. So glad he was switched! That would pay for the transmission so we wouldn't have to use the money we've been saving for trees and vacation and other stuff. Until they told us that the whole thing was melted from the inside out and the core was shot, so we have to buy a new one for $3K. (The car is only worth $4K LOL. But I can't buy a new car for $3k and it's got a lot of life left in it. So you repair and move on.) Ah, well. Ups and downs, right? Life is always interesting, that's for sure. Hopefully he'll get enough overtime to cover it. He likes to work the weekends, I think, because he gets out from behind his computer and phone and gets to do things, like welding.

So that's my story. Oh, here's a picture of the prom dress.

Her hair turned out really cute. I should have taken one of the back, too, dangit.

Lexi kept calling out to me to take her picture wearing someone's old flip flops. All kids are fascinated by that, it seems. You'll walk in and find your shoes just sitting in some random spot because Lexi has been wearing them.

Two More Good Things

Pigtails and Pajama Day at school.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Good:
St George was beautiful and warm. Things were green instead of brown. We drove down in a snow storm, but, like magic, as we pulled within a few miles of St. George the weather turned lovely. Every time we go there, we all sit and ask each other why we don't live there. And my answer is always the same: "Because it's April. If it were July we'd all be saying something different."

I have been somewhat enjoying American Idol this season. My favorite is Adam Lambert. And it's not because I like his music (which I do) but just because he's so different than the usual contestants. I'd like him even if I didn't like his music. He just seems confident and centered and hearts and flowers and puppies.

I am also loving Survivor this time around.

Spring is coming! Flowers are coming up. Blossoms are on the trees. It's Easter.

I think that everyone is finally well here.

Sean and I are going on a date shoe shopping. It was his idea. He said he'd take me out and buy me some shoes, which I desperately need. We're also shopping for trees. Yah, I don't know about that part.

Bad:
I didn't get many good pictures on our little getaway. Boo.

I hate hate hate that American Idol has taken one of my all-time favorite songs "Home Sweet Home" by Motley Crue and Idolified it for the bye-bye song when someone is going home. Ugh. I like Carrie Underwood OK. I think that's who they got to sing it. But not for that song. No no no.

I really really hate Coach on Survivor and wish they'd vote him out.

I haven't accomplished anything this week.

I'm tired of people telling me that Josh has dry skin and that they invented this thing called lotion that I should put on him. No, really? Wow, thanks for that advice. Do you have a few hours, because I'd love to sit down and tell you the history of the creams and lotions and whatnot that I've tried, to no avail, because the dry skin is only a small part of the problem. He doesn't scratch because the skin is dry. He has scratched himself bloody in parts of his body that aren't dry. Blah, whatever.

Ugly:
Me in a swimsuit. Gah! And my hair. I'm getting it done asap. I'm shaving it all off. Josh and I are going to have the same haircut.

American Idol Allison's clothes and crazy hair. And the audience always being so stupid to Simon. He's 97% always right, end of story. And Lady GaGa. And Kelly Pickler's voice.

My messy house.

My to-do list.
